Biography of Roger Delgado

Roger Delgado was an English actor, best known for his role as the First Master in the British television series "Doctor Who". He was born on March 1, 1918, in Whitechapel, in the East End of London.

Career

Delgado extensively worked on the British stage, as well as in TV, film, and radio. He made his television debut in 1955 in the BBC series "Quatermass II" and played a role in the war drama "Battle of the River Plate" (1956). He gained public attention in England when he portrayed the Spanish ambassador Mendoza in CMT Entertainment's series "Sir Francis Drake" (1961/62), which led to him being in high demand by directors. Delgado often played villains and appeared in many adventure series on British television, including "The Champions" (1969), "Danger Man" (1961), "The Saint" (1962, 1966), and "Randall and Hopkirk (Deceased)" (1969). He made a total of 16 guest appearances in ITC shows. He also appeared in "The Avengers" (1961, 1969), "The Power Game" (1966), and "Crossfire" (1967).

Doctor Who

Delgado began appearing in the television series "Doctor Who" in late 1970. His character first appeared in January 1971 in the adventure "Terror of the Autons". He later portrayed the Master in many episodes alongside the Third Doctor, including "The Mind of Evil", "The Claws of Axos", "Colony in Space", "The D?mons", "The Sea Devils", "The Time Monster", and "Frontier in Space". The Master's storyline was intended to conclude in the series "The Final Game", but it was never released and was later reworked after the sudden death of the actor. The character of the Master was eventually brought back to the series. Since then, several actors, including Anthony Ainley, Derek Jacobi, and John Simm, have portrayed the role.

Tragic Death

Roger Delgado tragically died in Turkey while filming his first comedic role in the movie "The Bell of Tibet". He was killed along with two Turkish film technicians when the driver of the car he was riding in lost control and veered off the road into a ravine. Roger Delgado passed away at the age of 55 on June 18, 1973.
