French Avant-Garde Visionary and Writer

French poet and writer, Jacques Rigaut was a pivotal figure in the surrealist movement of the early 20th century.

A Literary Rebel

Together with renowned writers René Daumal, Roger Vailland, and Joseph Sima, Rigaut founded the literary group "Le Grand Jeu" ("The Great Game"). The group's eponymous journal became a breeding ground for avant-garde ideas.

Decline and Tragic End

Rigaut's life was marred by relentless addiction to alcohol and drugs. The ravages of substance abuse took its toll, resulting in a fatal case of tetanus at the young age of 36. His death came during the Nazi occupation of Paris, adding a tragic end to his tumultuous life.
