The Early Life of Jean-Charles Cornay

Jean-Charles Cornay was born on February 27, 1820, in the Vienne department of France. He was ordained a priest in 1820 and joined the Paris Foreign Missions Society (MEP), a Catholic missionary organization.

Missionary Work in Vietnam

In 1821, Cornay embarked on a missionary journey to Vietnam. At that time, Vietnam was undergoing a period of intense persecution of Catholics. The reigning Emperor Minh Mang had issued an edict in 1825 forbidding the practice of Catholicism under the threat of death.

Undeterred, Cornay continued to engage in pastoral and missionary work in secret. Despite the risks, he was eventually captured by the Vietnamese authorities. On September 20, 1825, Jean-Charles Cornay was executed.

Sainthood and Legacy

In 1900, Jean-Charles Cornay was beatified by the Catholic Church. In 1988, Pope John Paul II officially canonized him as a saint. Today, Cornay is remembered as a martyr and a symbol of the unwavering faith of the Vietnamese Catholic community during times of adversity.
