Early Career and Loan Spells
Roman Bürki, a Swiss footballer, was born in Münsingen. At the age of 14, he joined the youth academy of Young Boys Bern, where he spent four years. During his time there, he played for the Young Boys U-21 team for two seasons.
Bürki began a series of loan spells in 2009, starting with a half-season at Thun in the 2009/10 season. He then moved to Schaffhausen for the 2010/11 campaign, playing in nine matches. After a brief return to Young Boys, where he made two league appearances, Bürki was loaned to Grasshoppers in early 2011.
Success with Grasshoppers and International Debut
Over the next 2.5 years at Grasshoppers, Bürki established himself as the starting goalkeeper, playing in 75 matches. His impressive performances led the club to purchase his contract for €1.8 million. In 2013, Grasshoppers won the Swiss Cup for the first time in 10 years, with Bürki playing a pivotal role in their penalty shootout victory over Basel in the final.
Bürki made his debut for the Swiss U-19 team in 2008 and his U-21 debut in 2011. He later earned his first cap for the senior national team in 2014.
Transfer to Borussia Dortmund
In June 2015, Bürki transferred to Borussia Dortmund, signing a contract until 2019. He quickly became the team's number one goalkeeper and kept clean sheets in his first four matches.
