Biography of Oleg Znarok
Oleg Znarok is a former Soviet and Latvian hockey player and coach. He was born into a sports-oriented family, with his father, Valery Znarok, being a well-known football and hockey coach in Chelyabinsk.
Playing Career
Znarok began his career playing for the Chelyabinsk-based team, Traktor. He then went on to play for Dynamo Riga from 1983 to 1992. In 1992, he spent a season playing in the AHL before moving to Germany, where he played for various German clubs until 2002.
Znarok represented the Soviet Union's junior national team in 1981, winning the European championship. He also played for the Soviet national team in 1990 and 1991. In the following years, he played for the Latvian national team, serving as captain for many years. He played a total of 50 games for the Latvian national team.
Coaching Career
After retiring as a player in 2002, Znarok turned to coaching. He initially worked as the coach of the Latvian junior national team and as an assistant coach for the senior national team. Under his guidance, the Latvian U-20 team achieved their first-ever promotion to the elite group in 2005. Since 2006, Znarok has been the head coach of the Latvian national team.
In 2008, Znarok became the head coach of the HC MVD in the Kontinental Hockey League (KHL). He has led the team to success, with several playoff appearances and strong performances in the league.
Znarok's coaching style is known for its emphasis on discipline, teamwork, and a strong defensive game. He has achieved success in developing young players and creating a competitive team environment. His coaching philosophy has earned him respect in the hockey community.
