Romola Garai: A Talented Actress and Director
Early Life and EducationRomola Garai was born on August 6, 1982, in Hong Kong to Adrian and Janet Garai. Her parents adopted two children, Ralph and Rosie, before welcoming Romola and her younger sister, Roxy. The family moved to Singapore and then to Wiltshire, England, where Romola attended a private school. From a young age, she displayed a passion for acting and performed in school plays.
At 16, Romola relocated to London and enrolled in a girls' school. She simultaneously pursued modeling and appeared on stage with the National Youth Theatre. After completing her secondary education, she entered Queen Mary, University of London, to study English Literature. However, she later switched to distance learning at the Open University to accommodate her burgeoning acting career.
Acting Career
Romola made her film debut at 18 with a minor role in the comedy "The Last of the Blonde Bombshells." She went on to appear regularly in television shows, but her breakout role came in the 2003 drama "I Capture the Castle." This performance earned her a nomination for the BIFA Most Promising Newcomer Award.
Despite starring in sequels to "Dirty Dancing" and "Vanity Fair," which received mixed reviews, Romola's career rebounded with "Atonement." Her portrayal alongside James McAvoy and Stephen Robertson garnered her a BIFA nomination and a commendation from the London Film Critics' Circle.
In 2007, Romola portrayed the title character in "Angel," an adaptation of Elizabeth Taylor's novel. The film received critical acclaim, with The Independent naming Romola its "Actress of the Year." She continued to impress audiences in "Emma" (2009) and "The Hour" (2011), receiving Golden Globe nominations for both.
Directing and Screenwriting
In addition to her acting work, Romola has ventured into directing and screenwriting. She made her directorial debut with the 2012 short film "Scrubber" and directed the 2020 horror film "Amulet" about a homeless soldier in a sinister London house.
Personal Life
Romola Garai met Mexican actor Diego Luna on the set of "Dirty Dancing: Havana Nights" in 2004. They dated for about a year before their relationship ended. In 2011, she met British actor and director Sam Hoare. They began living together shortly after meeting and welcomed a daughter in 2013. The couple married a year later and had a second child.
Romola is known for her private nature and prefers to keep her personal life out of the spotlight. Her social media presence is limited to fan accounts.
