Early Life and Influences
Born Ronald Pope on July 23, 1983, in Atlanta, Georgia, Pope's childhood was marked by two passions: music and basketball. However, these interests often conflicted, and in high school, he focused primarily on music, performing in several bands.
Athletic Scholarship and Injury
Despite his musical pursuits, Pope received an athletic scholarship to Rutgers University, where he prioritized basketball. Unfortunately, a knee injury two years into his university career prematurely ended his athletic aspirations.
NYU and The District
Undeterred, Pope transferred to New York University, renowned for its liberal arts and emphasis on fine arts. Here, he formed his first band, The District, which gained significant popularity beyond the university campus. The band released several albums, including "The District," "The District Does Christmas," and "Last Call," before eventually disbanding.
Rise of the Internet Musician
In 2005, the internet was abuzz with Pope's song "A Drop in the Ocean," co-written with his The District bandmate Zach Berkman. The song quickly went viral, introducing Pope's talent to millions. He embarked on live performances and even graced MTV with a set in 2007.
Independent Success
Despite releasing several independent albums in the years that followed, none matched the success of "A Drop in the Ocean." In 2009, Pope signed with Universal Republic and released two singles: "A Drop in the Ocean" and "I Believe." However, he remained steadfast in his preference for independent releases and recording in his own studio.
Critical Acclaim
Throughout his career, Pope has garnered widespread critical acclaim, even among America's most discerning tastemakers. The Berklee Groove praised him for "lighting up a fading music industry with a new spark of hope for those who write truly great, soulful music." The Daily Mirror hailed his arrival as a sign that "music... is not dying after all," celebrating the rise of young, independent artists.
Continuing Career
Today, Ron Pope continues to create and release new albums for his devoted fans. His latest work, "Calling Off The Dogs," is slated for an early 2014 release.
