Early Life and Amateur Career

Ron Stander was born in Columbia, South Carolina. His family later moved to Council Bluffs, Iowa, where he began boxing at a young age. As an amateur, Stander compiled an impressive record and won several regional titles.

Professional Career

Stander turned professional in 1968 and quickly rose through the ranks. After compiling a record of 23-1-1, including notable victories over Earnie Shavers, Jack O'Halloran, Manuel Ramos, and Thad Spencer, he was ranked among the top 15 heavyweights in the world.

Title Shot and Defeat

In 1972, Stander faced reigning world heavyweight champion Joe Frazier in Omaha, Nebraska. Despite a valiant effort, Stander was stopped in the fifth round via technical knockout. This marked his only career loss by knockout.

Continued Boxing and Notable Fights

Following his defeat by Frazier, Stander continued to box and faced several more top fighters. He lost by technical knockout to future world champions Ken Norton and Gerrie Coetzee. Stander retired in 1982 with a record of 37-21-3, with 28 of his wins coming by knockout.

Legacy

Stander was known as "The Council Bluffs Butcher" for his tough and aggressive style in the ring. Despite his failure to win a world title, he remains a respected figure in Iowa boxing history. Student journalist Andrew Batt produced a documentary film about Stander's life entitled "The Bluffs Butcher" in 2004, which won several awards.
