Biography of Ron Carter

Ron Carter, the iconic American jazz bassist, is known as one of the most prolific musicians in the genre. Born on May 4, 1937, in Ferndale, Michigan, USA, Ron grew up surrounded by music. From a young age, all eight children in the Carter family learned to play various instruments, sang, danced, and composed music. By the age of 10, young Ron was already proficient in playing the violin, trombone, cello, clarinet, and drums. As he grew older, Ron took up the double bass.

In 1958, Carter became a student at the Eastman School of Music in Rochester. He quickly established himself as one of the most talented students and began performing with professional orchestras from his first year. Under the guidance of renowned composer Howard Hanson, Ron took his first steps into the professional music scene. Simultaneously, he worked on creating his own jazz ensemble.

In 1961, Ron was accepted into the Manhattan School of Music, having already become an accomplished jazz musician. He had worked with the ensemble "Chico" and played alongside Gil Evans. In the same year, he embarked on a European tour. Throughout his extensive career, Ron Carter has played with numerous acclaimed jazz musicians. One of his successful collaborations was with Miles Davis' quintet. In 1969, the bassist formed his own ensemble called "360 DEGREE MUSIC: EXPERIENCE." The 1970s brought him a plethora of albums, including collaborations with Sonny Rollins and McCoy Tyner. He also played with Tony Williams, Jim Hall, George Benson, George Duke, Flora Purim, and many other renowned musicians. Ron Carter's discography includes over 500 records, both as a solo artist and as part of famous jazz collectives. Some of his solo albums include "Live at Village West," "Eight Plus," "Dear Miles," "Third Plane," "Yellow & Green," "Piccolo," "All Blues," "Blues Farm," and "Holiday In Rio."
