Biography of Ronald Venetian

Ronald Venetian was born in 1936 in Paramaribo, Suriname. He completed his education in his hometown and in 1961, he moved to the Netherlands to pursue further studies. Venetian obtained a doctoral degree in Mathematics and Physics from Leiden University and returned to Suriname in 1964. He initially worked as a teacher in a school and later became a mathematics lecturer at a higher school.

Political Career

In 1973, Ronald Venetian began his career in the Surinamese government as the Minister of Education. He held this position for seven years before returning to his previous career. He reentered politics in 1988 and served as a minister for the next three years. During this time, he also served as a member of the executive board of UNESCO and was an active member of the board of directors of the National Party of Suriname (NPS).

In 1991, Ronald Venetian became the President of Suriname after the success of the New Democratic Front in the elections. At that time, Suriname had three major political parties. As President, Venetian introduced constitutional amendments in 1992 to limit the power of the armed forces. He also signed a peace agreement with a influential partisan group and helped stabilize the country's currency.

However, in 1996, the New Front was unable to secure enough seats in the National Parliament, and Venetian was succeeded by a new president, Jules Wijdenbosch. During Wijdenbosch's presidency, Suriname experienced economic and political instability, with allegations of corruption against the new president.

In August 2000, Ronald Venetian was reelected as the President of Suriname for the second time. His main goals were to restore economic stability and attract foreign investments to the country. He inherited a devalued currency, high inflation, a collapsing healthcare system, and an inflated bureaucracy from his predecessor.

Under Venetian's government, urgent measures were taken to curb inflation and stabilize the exchange rate. The Venetian administration successfully reduced government spending and stabilized the banana industry with the help of international loans.

In August 2005, Ronald Venetian was once again elected as the President of Suriname. Although neither Venetian nor his political rival, Ramdien Sardjoe, received enough votes in the Parliament to become president, Venetian's candidacy was left to the discretion of regional bodies. He received the support of 560 out of 879 delegates.
