Formation of Lynyrd Skynyrd
In 1964, Van Zant joined forces with Allen Collins, Gary Rossington, Bob Burns, and Larry Junstrom to form "Lynyrd Skynyrd," a name coined after their high school gym teacher. The group gained prominence in 1973 with their debut album, featuring hit songs like "I Ain't the One," "Gimme Three Steps," and "Simple Man."
"Free Bird" and the Allman Connection
One of Lynyrd Skynyrd's most iconic tracks, "Free Bird," was a tribute to Duane Allman of the Allman Brothers Band, who had tragically died in a motorcycle accident. The song became an enduring anthem for the band and their fans.
Family and Personal Life
Van Zant married Nadine Incoe in 1967 but divorced two years later. In 1977, he wed Judy Jenness, with whom he had another daughter. In his spare time, he enjoyed playing basketball, cheering for the Chicago White Sox, and indulging in auto racing.
A Life Taken Too Soon
Tragedy struck on October 20, 1977, when Lynyrd Skynyrd's private plane crashed in Gillsburg, Mississippi. Van Zant, along with the guitarist, manager, and both pilots, lost their lives. The surviving band members suffered severe injuries and spent months recovering in the hospital.
Burial Site and Legacy
Ronnie Van Zant was laid to rest in Orange Park, Florida. In 2000, vandals desecrated the grave sites of the deceased Lynyrd Skynyrd members, scattering ashes and damaging headstones. Today, the cemetery contains a mausoleum that serves as a pilgrimage site for fans worldwide, paying homage to the legendary singer and his enduring legacy in rock and roll.
