Rory Scovel: American Comedian, Writer, and Actor
Early LifeRory J. Scovel was born in Greenville, South Carolina on August 6, 1980. He has six siblings. As a child, he played basketball, tennis, and football, and described himself as hyperactive and a class clown. He attended St. Mary's Catholic School and then Christ Church Episcopal School from kindergarten through eighth grade. He graduated from Greenville High School in 1999.
Scovel attended the University of Central Florida for one year before transferring to North Greenville University in South Carolina, where he graduated with a degree in Communications in 2003. He played Division II football while there.
Career
ComedyScovel first performed comedy in December 2003 at an open mic in Spartanburg, South Carolina. He had recently graduated college and was working as a cameraman for local television station WSPA. He moved to Washington, D.C. the following year and performed there for three years. He then moved to New York City, where he performed for another three years before relocating to Los Angeles, where he currently resides.
In 2006, Scovel competed in the Seattle International Comedy Competition, where he was a finalist. In 2010, he performed his first set for "Late Night with Jimmy Fallon." The following year, Scovel made an appearance on "Conan" with fellow comedian John Dore, using the premise that the show had accidentally booked two comics; Scovel also released his debut stand-up album, "Dilation" on Stand Up! Records. Scovel and the record were named by The Huffington Post as one of fourteen in their "2011 Guide to New Comedy Albums."
In 2012, Variety magazine named Scovel as one of their "10 Comics to Watch." In April of that year, his set was featured on Comedy Central's "The Half Hour." In 2013, he taped a concert at Third Man Records, Jack White's record label. The concert was pressed onto vinyl and released; no digital version of the recording exists. White would later serve as executive producer on Scovel's 2017 Netflix special.
In 2015, Scovel taped his first hour-long special at the Woolfe Street Playhouse in Charleston, South Carolina; the special was aptly titled "Rory Scovel: The Charleston Special." In 2017, Netflix released his next special, "Rory Scovel Tries Stand-Up for the First Time." Scovel has toured as an opener for comedians such as Louis C.K., Nick Swardson, and Daniel Tosh. He has performed at the Montreal Just for Laughs Festival, FYF Fest in Los Angeles, Vancouver Comedy Festival, Del Close Improv Marathon in New York City, Bumbershoot Festival in Seattle, and the Chicago Improv Festival.
Television and Film
Scovel's breakout acting role was as Harvard on the TBS sitcom "Ground Floor." He was a main cast member for both seasons of the show, which aired from 2013 to 2015. After "Ground Floor" was canceled, Scovel joined the main cast of "Those Who Can't," which debuted on TruTV in 2016, reprising his role as Principal Quinn from the 2013 Amazon film of the same name. Throughout the 2010s, he had various small acting and voice acting roles, including recurring roles on MTV's "Zach Stone Is Gonna Be Famous," NBC's "Undateable," and TBS's "Wrecked." Scovel played a small role in Demetri Martin's indie comedy "Dean." He had a supporting role in the 2017 wide-release comedy "The House." Notably, he was cast as the main love interest in Amy Schumer's 2018 comedy film "I Feel Pretty."
Scovel was a staff writer on seasons two and four of "The Eric Andre Show," which aired in 2013 and 2016, respectively. He was featured in the show's "New Year's Eve Spooktacular" as well as a season two episode in which he played a fictionalized version of himself, Chef Rory Scovel.
In November 2018, it was announced that Comedy Central had greenlit an eight-episode scripted comedy series created, written by, co-starring, and executive produced by Scovel, titled "Robbie." In an interview in February 2020, Scovel said that the show had been completed and was looking for a distributor. On May 6, 2020, Comedy Central announced that "Robbie" would premiere later that week. The show premiered on May 7, 2020, with Comedy Central releasing the entire series on its streaming platform and YouTube. "Robbie" is Comedy Central's first "binge-released" show. Scovel recently starred in Chris Blake's quarantine comedy "Social Distance," which was filmed remotely using iPhone 11s. The film was acquired and released by Cinedigm in October 2021.

Since 2018, Scovel has co-hosted the podcast "Pen Pals" with fellow comedian Daniel Van Kirk. Personal Life
Scovel is married to actress Jordan Bogrum. They reside in Los Angeles, where they welcomed a daughter in 2015.
