Cardinal Jorge Liberato Urosa Savino

Early Life and Priesthood

Jorge Liberato Urosa Savino was born in Caracas, Venezuela, on August 28, 1942. He joined the Salesian Society of St. John Bosco and was ordained a priest on September 29, 1967. He earned a doctorate in canon law from the Pontifical Lateran University in 1971.

Episcopal Career

In 1973, Urosa Savino was appointed titular archbishop of Precauza and auxiliary bishop of Trujillo. He served as coadjutor with the right of succession for the diocese until 1975. From 1975 to 1982, he held the position of Secretary of the Pontifical Commission for the Revision of the Code of Canon Law.

Curia Positions

In 1981, Urosa Savino became Chairman of the Disciplinary Commission of the Roman Curia. He also served as Pro-President of the Pontifical Commission for the Revision and Authentic Translation of the Code of Canon Law (1982-1985) and President of the same commission (1985-1989).

From 1989 to 1995, he chaired the Administration of the Patrimony of the Holy See. Additionally, he held the role of President of the Pontifical Commission for Vatican City State (1990-1997).

Cardinalate

On May 25, 1985, Urosa Savino was elevated to the College of Cardinals by Pope John Paul II. He was assigned the titular diaconal church of Nostra Signora di Coromoto in San Giovanni di Dio. In 1996, he was promoted to the rank of cardinal priest and retained the same titular church.

Later Years and Legacy

Urosa Savino served as Archbishop of Caracas from 2005 until his death on September 23, 2016. He was also the President of the Episcopal Conference of Venezuela from 2006 to 2014. Cardinal Urosa Savino was known for his outspoken defense of human rights, his work for social justice, and his leadership in the Catholic Church in Venezuela.
