Early Life
Rosemary Casals was born on September 16, 1948, in San Francisco, California. She grew up in poverty, as her parents had emigrated from El Salvador and struggled to support her and her older sister. At a young age, her cousins took her and her sister in and raised them as their own.
Tennis Career Begins
Casals' tennis journey began when her cousin Manuel Casals introduced her to the sport. Despite her small stature at 5'2", she quickly demonstrated her rebellious nature by competing against older girls in junior tournaments. She rose through the ranks, becoming a top-ranked junior and women's player in Northern California by the age of 16.
Dominance in Doubles
In 1966, Casals teamed up with Billie Jean King to form one of the most successful doubles partnerships in American tennis history. They won numerous Grand Slam titles and national and international tournaments. Casals also had a successful singles career, reaching a national ranking of No. 3 and winning 12 titles in singles, doubles, and mixed doubles.
Challenges the Status Quo
Beyond her on-court achievements, Casals was known for challenging tennis traditions. She advocated for open tournaments where professionals and amateurs could compete, and for equal prize money for women and men. In 1970, she and other female tennis players threatened to boycott major tournaments until their demands were met.
Post-Tennis Career
After knee surgery in 1978, Casals retired from tennis. She channeled her energy into other ventures, including becoming president of the California-based company Sportswomen, Inc. in 1981.
Legacy
Rosemary Casals was inducted into the International Tennis Hall of Fame in 1996. Known for her aggressive style of play and her advocacy for equality, she is regarded as one of the pioneers of modern tennis. Her contributions to the sport helped pave the way for the popularity and growth of women's tennis today.
