Lea Pericoli: A Tennis Icon and Style Enigma

Lea Pericoli was an Italian tennis player whose career spanned over two decades. Following her retirement, she became a renowned television presenter and journalist. In addition to her athletic achievements, she was an emblem of tennis fashion in the 1960s.

Early Life and Education

Born in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, Pericoli spent her childhood there with her parents and three siblings. During World War II, the family relocated to Asmara, where she attended a convent school in Nairobi, Kenya. At seventeen, she returned to Italy, her home country.

Tennis Career

Pericoli's career highlight was at Wimbledon, where she reached the third round on three occasions (1965, 1967, and 1970). Her greatest success was in doubles, winning the WTA Swiss Open in 1974 alongside Helga Schultze. They triumphed over Kayoko Fukuoka and Michelle Rodriguez with a convincing 6-2, 6-0 scoreline.

From 1963 to 1975, Pericoli represented Italy in the Fed Cup. She participated in nine tournaments, winning eight out of 16 singles matches and seven out of 14 doubles matches.

Italian Tennis Dominance

Together with Silvana Lazzarino, Pericoli formed one of the most formidable doubles partnerships in Italian tennis. They reached the national championship final six times consecutively. In 2015, Pericoli was inducted into the Italian Tennis Hall of Fame in recognition of her contributions to the sport.

Style Icon

Pericoli's impact extended beyond her sporting achievements. She captivated the world with her distinctive on-court style. In 1955, she graced Wimbledon in an outfit designed by Ted Tinling. In 1964, her tutu-inspired dress caused a sensation. Despite reaching only the third round, her attire became a talking point among fans and journalists alike.

Pericoli collaborated with the Italian sportswear brand Superga and became the face of their advertising campaigns. "I was remembered for my clothes, not my game," she confessed in a 2001 interview with the Sunday Mirror. She believed that if her career had started decades later, she would have garnered the wealth and fame of Anna Kournikova.

Journalism Career

On June 24, 1974, Pericoli debuted as a journalist for the Italian newspaper il Giornale. Mentored by renowned publicist Indro Montanelli, she became a respected tennis, fashion, and sports commentator. In 2009, she released her autobiography, "Maldafrica."

Personal Life

Pericoli married Tito Fontana on November 12, 1964, and they remained together until her passing.

Legacy

Lea Pericoli passed away on October 4, 2024, at the age of 89. Her legacy as both a tennis player and a journalist continues to inspire future generations.
