Her mother, Lydia Perez (nee Fontanez), was a singer, and her father, Ismael Serrano, was a merchant sailor.
In her younger years, Rosie attended Crover Cleveland High School in Queens and later enrolled in college in Los Angeles. She began her acting career in the late 1980s, dancing with the "Soul Train" team and appearing in music videos for artists such as Janet Jackson, Bobby Brown, Diana Ross, LL Cool J, The Boys, and others. Additionally, Rosie Perez worked as a choreographer for projects like "Fly Girls" and "In Living Color".
