Roy Raymond: The Father of "Victoria's Secret"
Roy Raymond, the founder of the iconic lingerie brand Victoria's Secret, was born in 1946. After graduating from Tufts University and Stanford Graduate School of Business, Raymond embarked on a journey that would forever change the world of women's intimate apparel.
The Birth of Victoria's Secret
In 1977, Raymond went shopping for lingerie for his wife but found the experience awkward and unhelpful. Inspired by his own discomfort and the lack of men-friendly lingerie stores, he decided to create his own.
With an initial capital of $80,000 raised from a bank loan and family assistance, Raymond opened the first Victoria's Secret store in the Stanford Shopping Center. The store aimed to provide a comfortable environment where men could shop for lingerie without feeling embarrassed or uninformed.
Explosive Growth
Victoria's Secret quickly gained popularity among customers who appreciated its open and non-judgmental approach to sexuality. Within a year of opening, the company had earned over $500,000 in revenue.
Over the next five years, Victoria's Secret expanded to five stores and launched its catalog, generating $6 million in annual revenue. The brand became synonymous with feminine allure and high-quality lingerie.
Financial Struggles and Sale
Despite its success, Victoria's Secret faced financial difficulties in 1982. Raymond sought buyers for the company, and ultimately sold it to Leslie Wexner for $4 million.
Under Wexner's leadership, Victoria's Secret grew into a global empire. The number of stores surpassed 1,000 worldwide, and the brand released stunning collections that captivated audiences.
Raymond's Later Ventures and Tragic End
After selling Victoria's Secret, Raymond attempted to open a children's clothing store, but it failed within two years. This failure, combined with personal and financial troubles, led Raymond to despair.
On August 26, 1993, at the age of 47, Raymond committed suicide by jumping off the Golden Gate Bridge. His body was recovered from the bay a week later.
Despite the tragic end of his life, Roy Raymond's legacy as the founder of Victoria's Secret remains. The brand he created continues to empower women with beautiful and empowering lingerie, shaping how women perceive themselves and are perceived by others.
