Childhood and Early Life
Ruby Stokes, a British actress, was born on September 4, 2000, in the London borough of Hackney. She has two younger brothers, Clement and Seth. From a young age, Stokes took up choreographic and vocal lessons. She attended the BRIT School for Performing Arts and Technology and performed at the Young Actors' Theatre Islington (YATI). Additionally, Ruby showcased her skills in the London Youth Circus, where her mother encouraged her to pursue aerial athletics after noticing her fondness for climbing rooftops and her lack of fear of heights.
Film Career
Stokes began her film career at the age of 10, making her on-screen debut in an episode of the comedy series "Just William." She later appeared in the sitcom "No Angels" and the multi-part adventure fantasy series "Da Vinci's Demons." Ruby's feature film debut came in 2016 with the thriller "Una," about a young woman haunted by her past. The film starred two-time Oscar nominee Rooney Mara, while Stokes portrayed the younger version of her character.
After performing in short films and lesser-known projects for a while, Stokes gained recognition for her role in the period drama series "Bridgerton." Set in early 19th-century London high society, the show focuses on the Bridgerton family, an aristocratic family with eight children. Ruby played Francesca, the sixth eldest child, who is more reserved and enigmatic than her siblings. She is cautious in her interactions, pragmatic, and possesses a dry wit. The character initially had less screen time than the other Bridgerton siblings due to Stokes' commitments to other projects.
"Bridgerton" and Beyond
Francesca made her first appearance in the first episode of the first season, accompanying her eldest sister Daphne (Phoebe Dynevor) to a presentation to the queen (Golda Rosheuvel), before leaving to pursue her musical education with her aunt. She only returned to London in the season finale, the eighth episode. In the second season, she supported another sister, Eloise (Claudia Jessie), at a debutante ball. Ruby appeared in the first three episodes before scheduling conflicts prevented her from continuing filming, and she departed the series after the season. Her role was recast with Hannah Dodd in subsequent seasons.
Concurrent with "Bridgerton," Stokes had a supporting role in the horror film "A Banquet." The film centers on a young woman named Betsy (Jessica Alexander) who becomes possessed after her father's death, leading her mother Holly (Sienna Guillory) and sister Isabel (Stokes) to suspect a sinister presence.

Ruby accepted the role of Lucy Carlyle, a psychic investigator, in "Lockwood & Co." after leaving "Bridgerton," as she was drawn to the opportunity to play a long-awaited lead character. The trio of lead actors underwent extensive preparation for the series, including drama training, rehearsals, fighting lessons, and bonding exercises to develop their characters' relationships.
Filming for "Lockwood & Co." began in the summer of 2021 and wrapped up in the spring of 2022. The series premiered on Netflix in January 2023.
