Rudolf Capel was a prominent German educator, historian, and philologist. Born to a minister in Hamburg, he pursued higher education at the universities of Wittenberg and Giessen before returning to his hometown.
Author of "Vorstellungen des Norden"
Capel's most notable work was the compilation of travelogues and historical accounts of northern Europe and Asia titled "Vorstellungen des Norden oder Bericht von einigen Nordl?ndern, und absonderlich von dem so genannten Gr?nlande." Published in Hamburg and Stockholm in 1678, this collection provided valuable insights into the regions explored by various travelers.
Error in Attribution
In his "Kritisch-Litter?rische ?bersicht der Reisenden in Russland," Russian historian Fyodor Adelung mistakenly claimed that Capel had personally traveled to Russia. However, Capel's work was solely a compilation of accounts from other explorers, as evident from its contents.
