Ernest Lavisse: French Historian and Educational Reformer

Ernest Lavisse was a distinguished French historian and member of the French Academy.

Early Life and Career

Lavisse graduated from the École Normale Supérieure and taught at the lycée in Nancy and later in Paris. He became deputy to Fustel de Coulanges for the chair of medieval history at the Faculty of Letters in Paris, where he later became a professor of modern history.

Historical Works

Lavisse's historical studies focused primarily on Prussian history, including works such as "La Marche de Brandebourg sous la dynastie ascanienne" (1875), "Études sur l'histoire de Prusse" (1879), "La jeunesse du grand Frédéric" (1891), and "Le grand Frédéric etc." (1893). He also wrote about medieval history, publishing articles in "Revue des Deux Mondes."

Educational Reforms

In addition to his historical research, Lavisse was deeply involved in educational reform. He advocated for universities in the German sense, supported student societies, and protested against the burden of examinations. His pedagogical writings were collected in three books: "Questions d'enseignement national" (1885), "Études et étudiants" (1890), and "A propos de nos écoles" (1895).

Textbook Success

Lavisse's учебные-historical books were highly successful. He wrote a preface to Freeman's "Historical Geography," which was published separately as "Vue générale de l'histoire politique de l'Europe" (1890).

Collaboration and Later Career

Lavisse collaborated with Alfred Rambaud on the monumental "Histoire générale du IV siècle à nos jours" (1893), contributing the overall plan and editing individual chapters written by experts. His books and university courses made him popular among the youth, and he was elected president of the association des étudiants de France.
