Early Life and Education
Rudolf Koelman, a renowned Dutch violinist, was born into a musical family in the Netherlands. From a young age, he displayed exceptional talent and began his violin studies with renowned teachers Jan Bore and Herman Krebbers.
Studying with the Master
In 1978, Koelman had the privilege of studying under the legendary violinist Jascha Heifetz in Los Angeles. This experience proved to be transformative, shaping his musical development and cementing his reputation as a virtuoso.
Orchestral Career
From 1996 to 1999, Koelman served as concertmaster of the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra in Amsterdam, one of the world's leading orchestras. His leadership and artistry were highly acclaimed, further solidifying his status as a distinguished soloist.
Teaching and Master Classes
Alongside his performing career, Koelman has dedicated himself to teaching. He has held professorships at the conservatories of Feldkirch, Winterthur, and the Düsseldorf University of Music. Since 2005, he has been a professor at the Zurich University of the Arts. Additionally, he has been a sought-after juror at international competitions and master classes, including the International Holland Music Sessions and Keshet Eilon in Israel.
Award-Winning Albums
Koelman has an extensive discography featuring acclaimed recordings of works by J.S. Bach, Eugène Ysaÿe, Johannes Brahms, Sergei Prokofiev, Henri Wieniawski, Nicolo Paganini, and Antonio Vivaldi. Notably, his album "Paganini: Violin Concertos Nos. 1 and 2" received the Edison Award in 2010, recognizing it as the most popular classical music CD in the Netherlands.
Instruments
Koelman performs on a violin crafted by J.F. Pressenda in 1829, as well as a violin by contemporary Dutch luthier Jaap Bolink, made in 1984. These instruments are renowned for their exceptional quality and playability, allowing Koelman to fully express his musicality.
