Biography of Rudolph Agricola

Rudolph Agricola, a Danish humanist and one of the most influential proponents of humanist teachings, was born in August 1443 in Baflo near Groningen. He initially studied in Groningen and later in Leuven, where he obtained a Master's degree in liberal arts. To further his education, he traveled to Paris.

During his time in Italy in 1476 and 1477, Agricola established connections with Greek scholars who had migrated there after the fall of the Byzantine Empire and gained the favor of Duke Este. It was in Italy that he also became friends with Johannes Dalberg, the Bishop of Worms. Upon returning to his homeland, Agricola endeavored to promote the study of ancient classical literature.

He delivered public lectures in Heidelberg and Worms. Agricola's fame rests more on his personal achievements rather than his literary contributions. His works were published in Latin (Cologne, 1539, 2 volumes). Agricola was also a painter and musician; the magnificent organ in the St. Martin's Church in Groningen is one of his creations.

Unfortunately, Agricola passed away in Italy on October 28, 1485, leaving behind a legacy as a prominent humanist and advocate for the study of classical literature.
