Biography of Rupert Pole

Rupert Pole was born in 1919 in Los Angeles, California. He came from a family of performers, with his father being the popular actor Reginald Pole known for his Shakespearean productions. However, Rupert's parents divorced when he was young, and his mother remarried Lloyd Wright, the son of famous architect Frank Lloyd Wright. Rupert grew up in an aristocratic environment and showed a talent for music, playing the viola and guitar. In 1940, he obtained a degree in music from Harvard University.

During World War II, Rupert participated in concerts alongside his wife Jane Lloyd-Jones, although their marriage was short-lived. In the late 1940s, while working as a successful young actor on Broadway, he met the provocative French woman Anaïs Nin, who would later make him famous. Rupert was 28 at the time, while Anaïs was 44. She was captivating, strong, passionate, and incredibly alluring. Anaïs, who would later publish a controversial novel based on her life, both fascinated and intrigued people, evoking both disgust and envy. In her diary, she noted his youth, passion, and sensitivity, even suspecting him of being homosexual. Rupert, in turn, was deeply affected by her personality and began insisting that Anaïs divorce her husband Hugh Guiler. He invited her to join him on the West Coast, and she eventually left Guiler, her first great love, to be with Rupert.

By the 1950s, Rupert had obtained a degree in forestry from the University of California, Berkeley. The couple settled modestly in a small house in the Sierra Madre Mountains, where Anaïs was known simply as Mrs. Anaïs Pole. They married on March 17, 1955, in Arizona, but it was later revealed that the marriage was not legal. The secret lay in the fact that Anaïs never obtained a divorce, and her husband believed she had gone to Las Vegas, while she divided her time between the West and East Coasts. For about 20 years, Anaïs successfully kept this secret and skillfully hid her two husbands from each other. Even after her death in 1977, she was listed as the wife of two different men in various obituaries – Rupert Pole according to the Los Angeles Times and Hugh Guiler according to the New York Times. It was only 20 years after her death that the scandal finally caught up with the enigmatic Anaïs, adding to the fantasy of her mysterious life.

However, at that time, Anaïs and Rupert were enjoying a quiet happiness in the countryside. He worked as a forester and schoolteacher, while Anaïs wrote new books and prepared previously written works for publication. Later, Rupert confessed that he simply played along with Anaïs's games, allowing her to stage a double life, just as Hugh Guiler did. Despite his jealousy, Rupert admitted that he loved his eccentric wife and that a marriage with a "normal" woman would have been uninteresting to him.

After Anaïs Nin's death, it was Rupert who became her literary heir. He was able to restore numerous erotic scenes that had been removed by previous editors. In 2006, Rupert suffered a stroke and passed away two weeks later. He died in his sleep on July 15, 2006, at his home in Los Angeles.
