Two-year-old British girl suffers serious burn after using hypoallergenic plaster
The entire shoulder of two-year-old Jaida Johnson was left burned and blistered after she experienced a severe allergic reaction to a plaster that is supposed to promote skin healing, according to the manufacturer's claims. Doctors say that J. Johnson may be left with scars for life after wearing the 'Savlon' plaster for just one day. The girl's family has complained to the manufacturer, stating that Jaida's shoulder, where there was only a small scratch, now looks hideous.
A father's concern
Jaida accidentally cut herself while sitting on the couch. Her father, 31-year-old bus driver Daniel, took out a hydrocolloid plaster from a £3.99 pack of 'Savlon' and followed the instructions carefully. It was recommended not to remove the adhesive mass for up to a week. The next day, Daniel decided to check on the healing progress and was horrified to discover his daughter's burnt skin. The plaster was only 7.5 cm by 5 cm, but Jaida's entire right shoulder was affected and inflammation appeared on her back. Doctors said that Jaida suffered a severe allergic reaction.
Claims vs. Reality
The packaging of the 'Savlon' plaster claims to help prevent scar formation and promote fast healing. The hydrocolloid dressings and plasters are said to absorb moisture from the wound while creating a protective barrier that prevents oxygen, water, and bacteria from entering the wound. The creators of 'Savlon' plasters also claim that their products are hypoallergenic, minimizing allergic reactions. However, it cannot be said with certainty that this specific component caused an allergic reaction in Jaida.
A future model
Currently, the two-year-old girl visits the hospital every two days for dressing changes. She was prescribed a course of antibiotics after it was discovered that her wounds were infected. Her grandmother, Margaret Johnson, says, "She is only two, but she will already have a scar. The doctor said that the scar may last a lifetime. And all this because of a simple scratch on her shoulder. It seems like the infection is spreading. I am very worried for my granddaughter. If the plaster had been needed on her face, it would have been 20 times worse. She has never had any skin reactions before." Despite everything, Margaret believes that Jaida may become a model in the future, saying, "My granddaughter is an amazing girl, but what happened to her is just awful."
Manufacturer's response
Jaida's family has filed a written complaint to 'Novartis Consumer Health' (NCH), the company that produces the 'Savlon' healing range. A company representative stated, "NCH is aware of the recent case regarding a patient who experienced a skin allergic reaction in relation to the use of the 'Savlon' hydrocolloid plaster. Patient safety is our top priority." The representative continued, "As with any other NCH product, we closely monitor any adverse reports received and submit them to the health authorities in accordance with local legislation. NCH is investigating this case, taking into account all regulatory requirements."
