Born on October 4, 1957, in Queens, New York, Russell Wendell Simmons is the son of a school principal and a parks administrator. After graduating high school, he attended City College of New York but dropped out to pursue a career in music production. His early collaborations include working with Kurtis Blow and producing Run-DMC's landmark album, featuring his brother, Joseph Simmons.

Def Jam Records

In 1984, Simmons met fellow producer Rick Rubin. Together, they founded Def Jam Records, which would become a legendary label. They signed iconic hip-hop acts such as the Beastie Boys, LL Cool J, and Public Enemy.
