Ruth Falcon: Biography of an American Soprano

Ruth Falcon, an American opera soprano, was born on November 2, 1942. She graduated from Loyola University of the South (now Loyola University New Orleans) in 1964 with a bachelor's degree in music, and later earned a master's degree from Tulane University.

Early Career

In 1968, Falcon made her debut with the New Orleans Opera Association, performing the role of Frasquita in Carmen, alongside Norman Treigle as Escamillo. In 1974, she debuted at the New York City Opera as Micaëla in Carmen. She continued to perform roles such as Contessa Almaviva in Le nozze di Figaro and Donna Anna in Don Giovanni at the New York City Opera.

Metropolitan Opera

Falcon made her debut at the Metropolitan Opera in 1989, singing the role of the Empress in Richard Strauss' Die Frau ohne Schatten. She performed at the Metropolitan Opera a total of 11 times. In 1992, she portrayed Chrysothemis in Elektra, conducted by James Levine. In 1996, Falcon sang the lead role in Turandot, with Angela Gheorghiu as Liù. Her final performance at the Metropolitan Opera was as Gertrud in Hänsel und Gretel in the 1996-1997 season, alongside Jennifer Larmore and Dawn Upshaw, conducted by Sir Andrew Davis.

International Performances

In addition to her performances at the Metropolitan Opera, Falcon has also appeared at Covent Garden, Paris Opéra, Wiener Staatsoper, Bayerische Staatsoper, Deutsche Oper Berlin, Teatro La Fenice in Venice, Teatro Colón in Buenos Aires, Opéra de Monte-Carlo, and the Aix-en-Provence Festival.

Teaching Career

Falcon has earned a reputation as a successful vocal teacher. As of 2011, she has been a faculty member at Mannes College the New School for Music in New York. Among her notable students are Spanish soprano Ainhoa Arteta, Australian-American lyric soprano Danielle de Niese, Sondra Radvanovsky, who specializes in 19th-century Italian opera, and Deborah Voigt.

Discography

Falcon has recorded Beethoven's Ninth Symphony under the baton of Yehudi Menuhin in 1990.
