Ruth Hussey - American Actress
Ruth Carol Hussey was born on October 30, 1911, in Providence, the capital of Rhode Island. She was an American actress, best known for her role as Liz Imbrie in the film "The Philadelphia Story," for which she was nominated for an Academy Award in 1940.
Early Life and Education
In 1918, Ruth's father died from the flu, and she was raised by her mother. She received her education at Pembroke College, which she graduated from in 1933. She then studied drama at the School of Drama at the University of Michigan and spent two years working in summer theaters in Michigan after completing her studies.
Career
After returning to Providence, Ruth worked as a commentator on local radio. While in New York, she caught the attention of an agent who signed her to a contract with the modeling agency "Powers" and for stage performances in her hometown theater. Ruth toured extensively with productions from this theater, and during one of her performances in Los Angeles, she was noticed by an agent from MGM, with whom she soon signed a contract.
In 1937, she made her film debut, and within a short period, Ruth became one of the leading actresses at MGM in "B" category films. Her role as Liz Imbrie in the film "The Philadelphia Story" earned her an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actress in 1940. She went on to appear in films such as "Susan and God" (1940), "The Great Gatsby" (1949), "Louisa" (1950), and "The Truth About Spring" (1960).
In 1946, she played the lead role in the play "State of the Union" and primarily focused on her theater career, only making a few appearances in films and on television.
Personal Life
In August 1942, Ruth married agent and radio producer Bob Longenecker. In 1977, after raising their three children, Ruth and Bob moved to a ranch in Carlsbad, California. Her husband passed away in 2002, just four months after their 60th wedding anniversary.
Ruth Hussey died on April 19, 2005, at the age of 93, due to complications following an appendectomy.
