Early Life and Education

Sabina Kunst was born in Germany and pursued her higher education at various universities. Between 1972 and 1982, she studied engineering, political science, chemistry, biology, and philosophy, earning doctorates in 1982 and 1990.

Academic Career

Research and Teaching

Kunst's early career involved research and teaching appointments. She worked as a scientific assistant at the Institute of Urban Water Management and Waste Disposal Technology (1979-1984) and served as a scientific staff member at the Central Center for Advanced Professional Development (1984-1985). She taught at the Technical University of Darmstadt (1985-1987) and the Waste Disposal Department of the Environmental Protection Agency (1986-1990).

University Administration

From 1991 to 2007, Kunst taught at the University of Hanover, where she also held the elected position of Vice President for Academic Affairs, Advanced Education, and International Relations. In 2006, she was unanimously elected President of the University of Potsdam, a position she held from 2007 to 2012.

Political Career

Minister of Science, Research, and Culture

In 2011, Kunst was appointed Minister of Science, Research, and Culture for the state of Brandenburg. She remained in this position under the leadership of Dietmar Woidke.

Social Democratic Party (SPD)

Kunst joined the SPD in December 2014.
President of Berlin University

In 2016, Kunststoff was the sole candidate for the presidency of the Freie Universität Berlin and was successfully elected. She continues to serve in this role today.

Personal Life

Kunst is married and has three adult children. She is the sister of Bishop Kirsten Fehrs.
