Biography of Sadaharu Hoshino

Sadaharu Hoshino, a Japanese designer, is known for his unique approach to fashion and his passion for music. He has been compared to a character from a Japanese manga, with his miniature body and signature black shirt. Hoshino's interest in fashion began at a young age when he realized that he would always struggle to find clothes that fit him properly. At the age of fifteen, he started sewing his own clothes using his grandmother's old sewing machine.

However, Hoshino soon realized that his creations were more suited for women. Undeterred, he pursued his passion and enrolled in the Bunka Fashion College in Tokyo, followed by the Nottingham Trent University of Art and Design in London, and finally the Institut Francais de la Mode in Paris. After completing his studies, Hoshino worked as an assistant to Alexander McQueen before deciding to start his own fashion brand, ES, in 2003.

ES collections are known for their androgynous grunge style, inspired by American rockers of the 1990s such as Kurt Cobain, Pearl Jam, and Spin Doctors. Hoshino's designs feature short vests, worn-out skinny jeans, and loose shirt dresses, intended to evoke a sense of rockstar energy on stage rather than the traditional catwalk.

In his latest collection, Hoshino explores the connection between fashion and music even further. Renamed ES orchestres, the collection includes conductor tailcoats, blouses with bow ties, T-shirts with saxophone prints, and even dresses shaped like double basses. Hoshino believes that the harmony found in music should also be present in his clothing, and he has attempted to express his admiration through his designs. The intricate lines resemble musical instruments, while the gathering and embroidery represent strings. The combination of black and white is reminiscent of a piano keyboard.
