Early Life and Education

Azerbaijani politician and public figure Fatma Abdullayeva was born in 1925 in Nakhchivan. She became a member of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union (CPSU).

Political Career

In 1951, Abdullayeva began her political journey as an instructor for the Nakhchivan Oblast Committee of the Azerbaijani Communist Party. She held various positions within the party, including Head of the Department, Head of the Lecture Group, and Minister of Education of the Nakhchivan Autonomous Soviet Socialist Republic (ASSR).

Rise to Prominence

In 1964, Abdullayeva made history by becoming the first Azerbaijani woman to lead a parliament, when she was elected Chairwoman of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the Nakhchivan ASSR. She continued to hold this position even after January 19, 1990, when the Supreme Soviet of Nakhchivan unilaterally declared the autonomous republic's secession from the USSR.

Later Years and Retirement

In April 1990, Abdullayeva was removed from her post and subsequently did not actively engage in politics. She passed away in 2010.
