Sali Keita: Malian Football Legend
Early Life and Football Career in MaliSali Keita was born on December 6, 1946, in Bamako, Mali. He began his football career in the youth ranks of Réal Bamako at the age of 13. His exceptional skills led to his inclusion in the senior team at just 16 and the Malian national team two years later, where he quickly became a key player.
Rise to Stardom in France
In 1967, Keita's talent caught the attention of Saint-Étienne, one of France's most prestigious clubs. He signed for the team and made an immediate impact, scoring 30 goals in his first 40 games. Alongside Hervé Revelli, he formed one of the most formidable attacking duos in Europe. Together, they helped Saint-Étienne win four consecutive league titles from 1968 to 1970.
African Footballer of the Year and European Success
In 1970, Keita became the first-ever recipient of the African Footballer of the Year award. He also won the Coupe de France that year, showcasing his all-around brilliance. The following season, he scored a remarkable 41 goals, earning him the European Silver Boot as the second-highest goalscorer in Europe.
Move to Marseille and Valencia
In 1972, Keita left Saint-Étienne for Olympique Marseille. He played alongside Yugoslav striker Josip Skoblar, who twice became the top goalscorer in France. After two seasons, Keita moved to Valencia in Spain, where he played under legendary manager Alfredo Di Stéfano.
Later Career
Keita continued to find success in the late 1970s. He won the Portuguese Cup with Sporting CP in 1978 and spent his last three seasons as a player in the United States for the New England Tea Men.
Achievements and Legacy
Throughout his career, Keita played 346 matches in first divisions across France, Spain, Portugal, and the United States, scoring 217 goals. His honors include:
