Samak Sundaravej: Thailand's Former Prime Minister
Early Life and EducationSamak Sundaravej was born in Bangkok, Thailand, on 13 June 1935. His father was a minor official, exposing him to political terms and concepts from a young age. After completing his schooling, Samak enrolled in Thammasat University's Faculty of Law. Following his graduation, he pursued further education in the United States.
Political Career
In 1968, Samak joined the Democrat Party of Thailand. He was offered the post of Deputy Minister of the Interior in 1976, which he accepted, resigning from the party. A major political upheaval in 1976 brought active participants to the forefront, among whom was Samak. As a result, he became the Minister of the Interior.
Throughout his career, Sundaravej held positions such as Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Cooperatives, Deputy Minister of the Interior, Minister of Transport, Deputy Prime Minister of Thailand, and Governor of Bangkok.
Corruption Allegations
Samak Sundaravej has been implicated in several fraud and corruption allegations, some of which are still under investigation.
Prime Ministership (2008)
In 2007, Samak was appointed leader of the People Power Party, which won the elections later that year. Samak became Prime Minister of Thailand on 29 January 2008, but his term was cut short.
In September 2008, Samak was removed from office due to his illegal involvement in a television cooking show. He was replaced by Somchai Wongsawat.
Post-Premiership
Despite his removal, Samak Sundaravej remains an influential figure in Thai politics. He has maintained powerful connections in high-ranking government positions and has substantial financial resources.
Personal Life
Samak Sundaravej is married and has two daughters. Apart from his political career, he hosted a popular cooking show called "This, Tell Me About It."
