Early Life and Education
Roxana Baldetti Elías was born on May 13, 1962, in Guatemala City, Guatemala. Her parents, Alejandro Baldetti and Gladys Elías de Baldetti, raised her in a conservative, Catholic family. After attending Colegio Monte Carmelo for elementary school, Roxana graduated from Colegio de Sr. El Sagrado Corazón in Guatemala City's historic center. She then earned a bachelor's degree in journalism from the University of San Carlos of Guatemala.
Early Career
Following her education, Baldetti worked as an elementary school teacher and a news anchor for "Aquí El Mundo." She co-founded the news program "Noticias" and later served as a Guatemala-based correspondent for Univision. Additionally, Baldetti owned a spa and several beauty salons.
Public Service and Political Involvement
In the 1990s, Baldetti entered public service as a Secretary of Social Communication. In 2001, she co-founded the Patriotic Party of Guatemala with Otto Pérez Molina. In 2004, she was elected to the Guatemalan Congress, where she served as the Patriotic Party's deputy leader. On August 15, 2011, Baldetti resigned from Congress to run for vice president.
Vice Presidency and Controversies
In 2011, Baldetti's alliance with Pérez Molina won the presidential election, and she became Vice President. However, her tenure was marred by corruption allegations. She resigned from office in May 2015 and was arrested in August 2015.
Personal Life
Baldetti married Mariano Paz in 1987, with whom she had two children: Luis Pedro and Mario.
