Biography of Samantha James
Samantha James is an American writer who is currently the author of approximately 40 romance novels. Her books have repeatedly appeared on the New York Times bestseller list, been nominated for the prestigious RITA award, translated into multiple languages, and have been published in millions of copies. Some of her novels were also published under the pseudonym Sandra James.
Early Life
Samantha James was born in Joliet, Illinois, into a family of avid readers. She grew up with a book in her hand and had a wide range of literary interests. As a child, she dreamt of various exciting professions, often influenced by the books she read. At the age of ten, she wanted to become an astronomer, then she was drawn to archaeology, inspired by the popular American series "Doc Savage" and the books of Edgar Rice Burroughs, which her older brother was fond of. She later became interested in Agatha Christie and Daphne du Maurier's novels, as well as the Trixie Belden series, which sparked her desire to become a detective. Following that, she dreamt of becoming a nurse after reading the "Cherry Ames" series.
Upon graduating from high school, Samantha decided to pursue a career as a flight attendant. However, she discovered that she had difficulty tolerating air travel, so she enrolled in a history program at college while working in an office.
Writing Career
Samantha James' writing career began unexpectedly during a corporate office Christmas party. One of her colleagues was told that Samantha had feelings for him, while Samantha was told that he was interested in her. This lighthearted encounter turned into a real romance. However, their relationship was tested when her beloved was drafted into the army and sent to Germany. Samantha wrote to him three times a week, and she later claimed that this was the beginning of her writing career.
After her partner's military service, they got married, and they eventually had three daughters. Samantha dedicated herself to caring for her family. When her youngest daughter was six months old, Samantha came across her first "romance" novel, "Moonstruck Madness" by Laurie McBain. She became so captivated by this new genre that she actively sought out similar books. Additionally, her older brother, who had always been her role model, confessed to writing a novel that was not accepted for publication but received positive feedback from reputable magazines. Inspired by his idea, Samantha decided to write a book herself.
Despite being rejected by publishers, Samantha's creative passion remained strong, and she started working on her fourth manuscript. Her brother suggested they collaborate on a fantasy story, but she put that idea on hold for later (which she has yet to realize). Samantha's debut as an author came with the publication of the romance novel "Probable Cause" in 1984 by Bantam. In 1986, she began collaborating with Harlequin Publishing. Under the pseudonym Sandra James, she published the novel "A Family Affair" in 1986 – a story about a surrogate mother who cannot forget the child she gave birth to. However, Samantha's real success came in 1992 with the release of her novel "My Cherished Enemy" under her own name, published by Avon. This romantic medieval story about the love between a proud beauty and an arrogant knight was well-received by readers and won the RT Reviewers' Choice Award for Best Medieval Romance. In 1996, Samantha James received the same award for her novel "His Wicked Promise".
Currently, Samantha James' bibliography includes historical and contemporary romance novels, as well as several book series such as "Wish" and "The Sterling Family". Her works, particularly those set during the Regency era, such as "The Perfect Bridegroom" (part of "The Sterling Family" series) and "Wish Upon a Star" (book two of the "Wish" series), are highly regarded among Russian readers. However, the award-winning novels by Samantha James have yet to be published in Russian.
Personal Life and Interests
Samantha James has a deep love for baseball. Since childhood, she watched all the games in which her brother participated and now cheers for the Chicago team. With her children grown up, Samantha recently became a grandmother. She enjoys cooking, particularly Italian cuisine, and loves to travel, especially to Scotland, which serves as the background for many of her novels.
