Biography of Samir Alekperov
Samir Alekperov is one of the most experienced football players in Azerbaijan. He played as a forward for most of his career, primarily for the flagship Azerbaijani football club, Neftchi Baku. Alekperov also represented the Azerbaijan national team. He retired from professional football in 2001 and as of 2011, he was the head coach of Neftchi's reserve team, Hazar-Lenkoran.
Early Career
Alekperov made his debut in the second division club, Gyandzhlik, in Baku in 1985. The following year, he played a full season with Karabakh in Stepanakert before transferring to Neftchi Baku. He made his debut for Neftchi in 1987 in an away game against Kayrat, playing the full 90 minutes. However, Neftchi suffered a 1-3 defeat. In the next game against Dynamo Tbilisi, he came on as a substitute and Neftchi won 3-0. Despite these appearances, Alekperov did not play again that season.
Professional Career
Alekperov's next appearance in the starting lineup was on July 31, 1988, in a home game against Shakhtar Donetsk, which ended in a 2-2 draw. He played seven more matches that season. In 1989, he became a regular player for Neftchi and only missed one game, scoring 12 goals. He continued his successful run in the 1990 season, missing only two games and scoring four goals. In 1991, he became the top scorer for Neftchi with 11 goals. Alekperov played for Neftchi in the Azerbaijan championship from 1992 to 1994 and was recognized as the best football player in Azerbaijan in 1992 and 1993. He also held the title of the team's top scorer for three consecutive years.
In the 1994/95 season, Alekperov played for Maccabi Petah Tikva, an Israeli club in the top league of the Israeli championship. He returned to Azerbaijan in 1995 and continued his career with Neftchi. He played a total of 133 games for Neftchi in the Azerbaijani championships.
Coaching Career
After retiring from playing in 2002, Alekperov transitioned to coaching. From 2002 to 2006, he worked as an assistant coach for Neftchi. He then served as an assistant coach for Hazar-Lenkoran from 2006 to 2008. In July 2009, he was appointed as an assistant to the director of the youth academy at Hazar-Lenkoran and later served as the acting director in 2010. At the same time, in September 2009, he became the head coach of Hazar-Lenkoran's reserve team.
In 2007, Alekperov obtained a UEFA "B" license certification. He also represented the Azerbaijan national team from 1992 to 1996, playing 16 matches and scoring two goals.
