Biography of Sam Pek Elliot
Sam Pek Elliot was an American actor born on August 9, 1944 in Sacramento, California, USA. Known for his rugged complexion and gravelly voice, he often portrayed cowboys in western films. His mother was a sports coach and his father worked in the Department of the Interior of the United States.
Early Life and Education
After living in California for some time, Sam and his family moved to Oregon. He attended David Douglas High School in Portland and also attended Clark College in Vancouver, Washington. During this time, Sam successfully auditioned and landed the lead role in the film "Guys and Dolls". A local newspaper even mistook him for a professional actor in an article dedicated to the film. Shortly after, Elliot decided to pursue a career in Hollywood.
Career
While studying at California State University in Los Angeles, Sam joined the student organization "Sigma Alpha Epsilon". He had to balance his acting lessons with work on construction sites. He also lived in Princeton, West Virginia for a period of time. In 1969, Sam made his debut in the film "Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid". Before signing a contract with Paramount Pictures, he appeared as Dr. Douglas Lang in the television series "Mission: Impossible". He also starred in the horror film "Frogs" in 1972 and the series "Hawaii Five-O".
Elliot gained recognition at the age of 32 in 1976, after appearing in the cult film "The Rescuers". However, he disliked how Paramount constantly portrayed him as the dreamy guy every girl desired. Despite this, it took some time for him to break free from these stereotypical roles. During the filming of the movie "Legacy", Elliot met his future wife, Catherine Ross. He became well-known for his portrayal of cowboys, with his bushy mustache becoming his trademark in many westerns. In 1981, he played a killer in the film "The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford", and in 1986, he appeared in "Fatal Beauty". In 1985, he played Cher's love interest in the comedy film "Mask". In 1991, Elliot tried his hand at executive producing with the independent film "Conagher", which received high ratings. In 1995, he portrayed Wild Bill Hickok in "The Quick and the Dead".
Elliot also lent his voice to various commercials for companies such as Chevy, IBM, and Union Pacific. In 2007, he signed a contract with Toyota and provided the voiceover for their commercial for the Toyota Tundra truck. He also appeared in films such as "Road House" with Patrick Swayze and "Tombstone" with Kurt Russell and Val Kilmer. He had several cameo roles in films such as "We Were Soldiers" and "Gettysburg". In 2009, Sam played a small role as the captain of an American Airlines passenger plane in the film "Up in the Air", as well as Lorne in the film "Did You Hear About the Morgans?". He has also appeared in several other films and TV series throughout his career.
Personal Life
Since 1984, Sam Elliot has been married to actress Catherine Ross. They have a daughter named Cleo Rose.
