Early Life and Naval Education
Born into a Jewish FamilySamuil Nakhmanovich Bogorad was born on August 17, 1907, in Vitebsk, Belarus. His working-class family provided a humble upbringing.
Naval Career Begins
Bogorad initially pursued a career in the merchant marine, graduating from Leningrad Naval Technical College in 1935. As the Second World War approached, he was drafted into the Soviet Navy in 1940.
Submarine Training
After enlisting, Bogorad underwent comprehensive training at the Submarine Training Detachment. He excelled, completing the Higher Special Courses for Commanding Officers of Submarine Navigation in 1941.
World War II Service
Joining the Baltic FleetWith the outbreak of the Great Patriotic War in June 1941, Bogorad became an Assistant Commander on the submarine "D-2" in the Baltic Fleet.
Commanding "D-2"
In September 1942, Bogorad took command of the "D-2." During a combat mission, his crew successfully sank the German transport "Jacobus Fritzen" and heavily damaged the railway ferry "Deutschland."
Commander of "Shch-310"
In March 1944, Bogorad was appointed Commander of the submarine "Shch-310." Under his leadership, the "Shch-310" sank or damaged eight enemy vessels in three combat missions.
Post-War Career
Continued Naval ServiceAfter the war, Bogorad remained in the Soviet Navy. He commanded the submarine "K-56" from 1945 to 1948 and the "N-28" until 1950.
Leadership Roles
In the early 1950s, Bogorad held several senior positions, including Commander of the 3rd Division of the 1st Submarine Brigade and Head of Submarine and Anti-Submarine Training for the 8th Navy.
Civilian Life
Bogorad retired from the Navy in 1961 after a distinguished career. He subsequently worked for the Latvian Shipping Company before passing away in Riga on April 23, 1996.
Legacy and Honors
Hero of the Soviet UnionFor his extraordinary bravery and leadership during the war, Samuil Nakhmanovich Bogorad was awarded the title Hero of the Soviet Union in 1945.
Other Recognitions
The "Shch-310" submarine under Bogorad's command received the Order of the Red Banner in 1945. He was also promoted to Captain 1st Rank in 1955.
