Biography of Sandor Zicherman
Early Life and EducationSandor Zicherman, a Soviet and Hungarian artist, was born in an unknown date. He began his artistic education in Lviv and later in Leningrad. He completed his studies at the Mukhina School in 1964.
Artistic Career
Zicherman's first exhibition took place in 1957, even before he officially finished his education. He became a member of the Union of Artists of Russia in 1965 and the Union of Artists of Hungary as well as the Society of Hungarian Sculptors and the World Association of Medalists.
Contributions to Togliatti
In 1972, Zicherman moved to Togliatti at the invitation of the city's administration to organize cultural and artistic life. With his help, creative workshops, an art lyceum, and an art gallery were established in the city. He played a significant role in the opening of the Togliatti branch of the Union of Artists. In 1987, Zicherman organized the first Russian sculptors' symposium in Togliatti.
Later Life
For a period of time, Zicherman moved to Samara, where he married a local actress named Zinaida Sokolova. In 1989, he relocated to Budapest. Zicherman explained his move by saying, "In the past, in the Soviet Union, they didn't let me exhibit, saying, 'You are not a Russian artist.' I don't know a single person who is one hundred percent Russian or Mordvin. It's impossible! We all have so many nationalities mixed in us." He considers himself a Hungarian artist of Russian origin.
Artistic Style
Zicherman is known for his sculptures, tapestries, mosaics, frescoes, and medals. His works are featured in the Hermitage Museum and 20 other museums across Europe. He does not adhere to a specific genre in his art; his works include graphics, portraits, avant-garde pieces, and classical landscapes. In recent years, he has also delved into the genre of "nudes". Zicherman employs a variety of stylistic techniques in his work, including cubo-futurism, post-impressionism, and realism.
Exhibitions and Popularity
Zicherman regularly returns to Russia, where his solo exhibitions are held annually. In 2006, an exhibition dedicated to the 40th anniversary of AvtoVAZ featured his works in Togliatti. In 2007, a exhibition took place in Samara.
Notable Theft Incidents
Unfortunately, Zicherman's works have also been targeted by thieves. In the early 1990s, one of the organizers of an exhibition stole 171 exhibits. In Samara, a memorial plaque commemorating the 100th anniversary of the birth of People's Artist Georgy Shebuev was stolen. In Togliatti, a two-meter sculpture made of pink marble disappeared from one of the exhibitions.
