Biography of Andrew Myers

Andrew Myers is an American artist and sculptor of European descent. He was born in Braunshweig, Germany and grew up in Ciudad Real, Spain. Currently, Myers resides in Laguna Beach, California. He learned to look at art from a unique perspective while studying at the Laguna College of Art and Design, formerly known as the Art Institute of Southern California. Clay sculptures played a significant role in shaping Myers as an artist. Despite their simplicity and primitive nature, clay figures deeply captivated him, especially their tactile quality. Myers incorporates various unconventional materials into his works, including oil paint, charcoal, screws, and everyday objects. Unlike traditional sculptures and paintings that can be appreciated solely through sight, Myers takes pride in the fact that his works require touch to fully experience them. Surprisingly, his creations have proven to be accessible to blind individuals. Myers recalls a blind person touching one of his sculptures - a three-dimensional portrait made meticulously from thousands of screws - and witnessing a warm smile on their face. It was a rare opportunity for them to perceive something without relying on their vision. Interestingly, Myers refuses to refer to himself as a creator, as he is deeply religious and believes that only God can create in this world. According to Myers, artists have a modest role in the grand scheme of creation, to bring color and beauty to the valley of sorrow by translating fragmented emotions and thoughts into unified pieces of pure beauty. While Myers is best known for his "screw" sculptures, his successful works span a wide range of genres and materials. His artistic style is consistent and recognizable, whether it's in sculpture or painting. Myers has a particular fondness for "quick" charcoal sketches, which showcase his talent. He also excels in more complex projects that require patience and precision, such as his screw sculptures that demand significant time and expertise in mathematics and metal resistance. On average, Myers creates 5-10 masterpieces per year, each of which is the result of careful contemplation, meticulous planning, and precise execution. Myers views the process of creating sculptures as both a personal challenge and a gift. It allows him to dedicate his energy, time, and skills to produce new works of art that transcend imagination.
