Early Life and Career
Sandra Bernhard, an American comedian, singer, actress, and writer, was born on June 6, 1955, in Flint, Michigan. Her Jewish family relocated to Scottsdale, Arizona, when she was ten. After graduating from Saguaro High School, she lived on a kibbutz in Israel before moving to Los Angeles at the age of 19. Briefly employed as a manicurist in a high-end salon, Bernhard first gained prominence performing at The Comedy Store.
Breakthrough in Film and Television
In 1983, Bernhard made her breakthrough in Martin Scorsese's crime comedy "The King of Comedy," portraying Masha and winning the National Society of Film Critics Award for Best Supporting Actress. She launched her first one-woman show, "I'm Your Woman," in 1985, releasing a less successful album version of the project.
Improv and Live Performance
Bernhard continued to hone her improvisational comedy skills throughout the 1980s, increasingly incorporating performance art into her routines. Her off-Broadway show "Without You I'm Nothing" debuted in 1988 at the Orpheum Theatre. In 1990, she co-wrote and starred in the musical comedy film of the same name, also releasing a double music album.
"Roseanne" and Cultural Impact
In 1991, Bernhard joined the cast of the hit sitcom "Roseanne," playing Nancy Bartlett in 33 episodes until 1997. The portrayal of Nancy as an openly lesbian character on American television was groundbreaking, with Bernhard later referencing it as both a blessing and a curse.
Artistic Explorations and Motherhood
In September 1992, Bernhard posed nude for Playboy magazine. She continued her acting career, primarily in independent films and guest starring roles on television series. She also starred in popular films such as "Hudson Hawk" (1991) and "Dallas Doll" (1994). Despite a commercially unsuccessful debut studio album, Bernhard's live shows remained in high demand. In 1998, she returned to Broadway with "I'm Still Here... Damn It!" and gave birth to her daughter, Cicely Yasin Bernhard, via cesarean section on July 4.
Independent Projects and Later Career
For several years, Sandra recorded her live performances independently, selling inexpensive CD-Rs in the lobbies of her shows. She continued to appear in minor film and television roles. In 2006, Bernhard re-emerged with the off-Broadway show "Everything Bad & Beautiful," whose CD release was critically acclaimed by independent record label Breaking Records.
