American Woman Who Shot her Grandson
On May 18, 2012, 75-year-old Sandra Layne killed her own grandson, 17-year-old Jonathan Hoffman, in what can hardly be called an accidental murder. The autopsy revealed that Jonathan had been shot multiple times - three times in the chest, once in the stomach, and once in the left hand. What led the 75-year-old grandmother to commit such a horrifying crime? The prosecution insists on charging her with first-degree murder.
The Fear that Drove Her
According to the defense team and Sandra's lawyer, Jerome Sabbota, this was a necessary action driven by fear. Sandra lived in constant fear, which ultimately pushed her to commit the murder. Interestingly, she took in Jonathan to live with her after his parents' divorce, and he was her favorite grandson. Over time, according to the defense, the boy became uncontrollable, transforming into a so-called "difficult teenager." Sandra, at 75 years old, couldn't cope with him. Jonathan was using marijuana, had been expelled from school, and was serving probation for drug-related offenses.
The Tragic Phone Call
"On me...My grandmother shot me, I'm going to die...Help..." These were the words Jonathan managed to shout into the phone before the fatal incident. The 911 operator heard screams and the sound of gunshots - Sandra Layne shot her grandson while still on the phone. When the police arrived at the house, the elderly woman came out onto the porch with her hands raised, saying, "I killed my grandson." The murder weapon, a 9mm pistol, was found at the scene, along with nine spent shell casings.
Legal Outcome
The expected outcome of the trial was a first-degree murder charge, but only time would reveal the final verdict.
