Sandra Oh: Biography

Sandra Oh is a Canadian actress best known for her role as Dr. Christina Yang in the ABC series 'Grey's Anatomy', for which she won a Golden Globe award. She has also played notable roles in the films 'Under the Tuscan Sun' and 'Sideways', as well as a supporting role in the original HBO series 'Arli$$'.

Early Life and Career

Sandra Oh was born on July 20, 1971, in Nepean, Ottawa, Canada. She grew up in a middle-class family of Korean immigrants, with her father Joon-Soo being a businessman and her mother Young-Nam being a biochemist. From a young age, she began studying ballet and exploring the field of acting. At the age of 10, Sandra performed in the classic musical 'The Canada Goose'.

While attending Sir Robert Borden High School, Sandra founded an environmental club called 'BASE' and became involved in campaigning against the use of polystyrene cups. She also served as the president of the student council. Sandra continued to pursue ballet and acting, eventually realizing that she wanted to focus solely on acting as her career.

Despite her parents' advice, Sandra turned down a journalism scholarship at Carleton University and instead attended the prestigious National Theatre School of Canada in Montreal.
