Sandra Oh is a Canadian actress best known for her role as Dr. Christina Yang in the ABC series 'Grey's Anatomy', for which she won a Golden Globe award. She has also played notable roles in the films 'Under the Tuscan Sun' and 'Sideways', as well as a supporting role in the original HBO series 'Arli$$'.
Early Life and Career
Sandra Oh was born on July 20, 1971, in Nepean, Ottawa, Canada. She grew up in a middle-class family of Korean immigrants, with her father Joon-Soo being a businessman and her mother Young-Nam being a biochemist. From a young age, she began studying ballet and exploring the field of acting. At the age of 10, Sandra performed in the classic musical 'The Canada Goose'.
While attending Sir Robert Borden High School, Sandra founded an environmental club called 'BASE' and became involved in campaigning against the use of polystyrene cups. She also served as the president of the student council. Sandra continued to pursue ballet and acting, eventually realizing that she wanted to focus solely on acting as her career.
Despite her parents' advice, Sandra turned down a journalism scholarship at Carleton University and instead attended the prestigious National Theatre School of Canada in Montreal. During her time in theater school, Sandra had a breakthrough role as a waitress in the television film 'Degrassi High: School's Out'. This film mirrored her own decision to pursue acting instead of journalism, just like her character's coworker, played by Stacie Mistysyn.
After graduating from the National Theatre School in 1993, Sandra quickly gained attention for her role in David Mamet's play 'Oleanna' in London, Ontario. Around the same time, she won the role of Vancouver writer Evelyn Lau in the biographical film 'The Diary of Evelyn Lau', beating out over 1000 other contenders. She also portrayed journalist and political figure Adrienne Clarkson in another biographical film.
Breakthrough and Success
Sandra expanded her fame in Canada with her leading performance in the drama 'Double Happiness', for which she won a Genie Award for Best Actress. She then gained international recognition for her supporting role as Bernie, the PR manager of an art gallery, in the family comedy 'Bean'.
Other Canadian films featuring Sandra include the fantasy drama 'Long Life, Happiness & Prosperity' and the science-fiction drama 'Last Night', for which she won another Genie Award in the Best Actress category.
