Early Life and Club CareerBorn on December 18, 1969, in Spain, Santiago Cañizares began his football journey as a graduate of Real Madrid's youth academy. In 1992, he was sold to Celta de Vigo, where he impressed for two seasons. Real Madrid then reacquired him for €3 million in 1994, before transferring him to Valencia CF.
Valencia CF: Glory and Heartbreak
At Valencia, Cañizares established himself as one of the best goalkeepers in Europe. He played every league game in 1998, won the Copa del Rey, and reached two UEFA Champions League finals. In the 2001 final, he made crucial saves but ultimately lost to Bayern Munich.
International Career
Cañizares debuted for Spain in 1993 and earned a spot in the 1994 World Cup squad. Despite not playing in that tournament, he became the first-choice goalkeeper at UEFA Euro 2000, appearing in three matches. However, an unfortunate injury prevented him from competing at the 2002 World Cup.
Later Career and Retirement
After the World Cup, Iker Casillas became the regular goalkeeper for Spain. Cañizares remained in the background for several years, but he continued to be a dependable reserve. He retired from football in 2008.
