Sarah Broitigam: A Life on the Edge
A Life-Changing DiagnosisSarah Broitigam, a 21-year-old former British canoeist from Doncaster, South Yorkshire, has experienced the brink of death multiple times due to a rare heart condition. Four years ago, her life turned upside down when she was diagnosed with postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome (POTS). This condition causes rapid heart rate and can lead to cardiac arrest. Each time Sarah faces the possibility of death, her heightened sense of hearing becomes her last working sensation.

A Life of Constant Struggle
Sarah's dreams of becoming a burlesque dancer were shattered by her debilitating health conditions. Alongside POTS, she also suffers from joint hypermobility syndrome, which leaves her prone to dislocations and subluxations. The combination of these illnesses has resulted in Sarah visiting the emergency room 64 times in just one year. Despite the constant challenges, Sarah remains determined and strong-willed, refusing to let her conditions undermine her faith in her own abilities.

A Glimmer of Hope
Sarah's passion for canoeing led her to be accepted into the British rowing team. She trained six days a week and had aspirations of joining the Royal Navy. However, her diagnosis shattered her dreams once again, as she was told she could no longer compete. Additionally, simple tasks such as finding work or obtaining a driver's license became daunting challenges for Sarah.

A New Lease on Life
Despite her struggles, Sarah managed to find solace in becoming a burlesque dancer. This new endeavor provided her with a sense of purpose and a fresh perspective on life. She made new friends and started appreciating life in a different way. Remarkably, since she began pursuing her passion for dance, she has only experienced one episode.
A Life Lived to the Fullest
Sarah acknowledges that her condition could potentially take her life, but she remains determined to live each day to the fullest. She believes that living a full life is more important than living a long life shielded from adversity. Sarah's journey serves as an inspiration to embrace every moment, no matter the challenges that may come our way.
