Biography of Sarah Burton
Sarah Burton is a renowned fashion designer and the creative director of the London-based fashion label 'Alexander McQueen.' She was also the right-hand woman of the late Lee Alexander McQueen, the founder of the brand.
Early Life
Sarah Burton was born and raised in Manchester. In 1997, she graduated from the Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design in London.
Work with Alexander McQueen
Burton started working with Lee Alexander McQueen in 1996 and gradually became the head of the women's clothing department by 2000. She played a crucial role in completing the selection of pieces for the fall-winter collection of 2010-2011. This task was particularly challenging as McQueen tragically passed away a month before the start of Paris Fashion Week. Despite the difficult circumstances, Burton managed to finish the collection single-handedly. Her efforts were highly praised by both sellers and the fashion press.
Continuing McQueen's Legacy
Burton acknowledged that Lee Alexander McQueen had gained recognition for his extraordinary ability to create stunning contemporary clothing. She expressed her determination to carry on his work with utmost dedication. The Gucci Group, the parent company of Alexander McQueen, confirmed their commitment to supporting the brand, primarily because McQueen had established a mechanism that could continue functioning even without him. It was crucial to appoint someone who had a deep understanding of McQueen during his lifetime, and Sarah, with her more than 14 years of experience working with the legendary designer, perfectly fit the role.
Leadership and Future Prospects
Jonathan Akeroyd, the president and CEO of the label, declared his full confidence in Burton's talents and her ability to continue McQueen's legacy. He also mentioned that under the guidance of the new creative director, the brand would undoubtedly progress to the next level of its development. Robert Polet, the president and CEO of the Gucci Group, shared the same enthusiasm for Burton's promotion. In his speech, he reaffirmed the belief of the Gucci Group in the label's prospects. Sarah's appointment to the new position is expected to strengthen the company, especially considering that 'Alexander McQueen' is currently experiencing active growth. The brand is planning to launch a new line of men's underwear in collaboration with the Italian group 'Albisetti SpA' in the near future.
