A Life Turned Upside Down
Sarah Ezekiel, a 47-year-old resident of London, begins her story by describing her once happy and fulfilling life. She was happily married, had a beautiful daughter, and was expecting her second child. She was healthy and enjoying life, not imagining that anything could go wrong.
However, everything changed when Sarah started experiencing weakness in her left hand and noticed her speech becoming slurred. In April 2000, she received a devastating diagnosis - motor neuron disease. Soon after, Sarah became completely paralyzed. Her world crumbled - her happy marriage ended, and she couldn't take care of her children or herself. Sarah, who never expected such a turn of events, fell into a deep depression.
Finding Hope and Passion
It took Sarah several years to come to terms with her new reality and learn to accept it. Gradually, she began to recover and started searching for the good in her life. Even at her lowest point, she knew she had to push herself up from rock bottom. Sarah's first step towards recovery was entering the Marie Curie hospice, where she found not only help but also comfort and love. She speaks warmly of this place, which couldn't physically heal her but taught her how to breathe, feel, and enjoy life again.
Discovering a New Talent
Prior to her illness, Sarah Ezekiel worked as a legal secretary. Now she found herself bedridden or confined to a wheelchair, unable to use a computer. However, as life would reveal, there is always a way out even in seemingly hopeless situations - all it takes is patience and the willingness to search for it.
One day, Sarah, who had been immobile for several years, received a unique proposal - the hospice offered her the opportunity to paint with her eyes. A special device, which reads eye movements and translates them into computer commands, made this possible. Surprisingly, similar eye-tracking devices have brought joy and a sense of fulfillment to many paralyzed individuals, enabling them to use computers.
A Second Chance in Art
For Sarah, the computer became a "second chance" in life - she could finally start painting. Initially, the hospice staff suggested she try painting as a hobby, but it quickly became an essential part of her life. Painting became her passion and gave meaning to her life, fulfilling a void that had existed since her illness. Less than a year later, Sarah Ezekiel held her first exhibition as a paralyzed artist. Her paintings capture life in all its vibrant colors - from recognizable flowers to abstract fantasies. What sets her artwork apart is the emotion conveyed through her vibrant color choices. Perhaps it's because she paints from within herself.
Giving Back and Inspiring Others
