Birth of Conjoined Twins in India
Mother Gives Birth to Twins with Fused SkullsAn Indian woman named Sarifa Khatun gave birth to twin daughters who were conjoined at the head, potentially sharing a single brain. The 35-year-old woman became the mother of Siamese twins, girls with separate bodies but fused skulls facing in opposite directions. The babies were born with normal limbs and vital organs.
Medical Examination and Prognosis
The twins' parents, farmer Yakur Ali from the Indian state of Assam, were informed by doctors that the girls might share a single brain. However, pediatrician Aatur Rahman expressed optimism that surgery could successfully separate the babies and allow them to live a normal life. He stated, "This is a rare occurrence. The babies are stable, healthy, and can be separated through surgery."
Rahman further explained that only a neurosurgeon could determine the full extent of the twins' condition. "We have referred the girls to a better-equipped hospital in Guwahati, where a pediatric surgeon and a neurosurgeon can assess the situation," he added.
Home Birth and Parental Hopes
Khatun was forced to give birth at home after her water broke. Due to a lack of transportation in her village, she was unable to reach a hospital. The distressed parents now hope that surgery will successfully separate their daughters and provide them with a healthy future.
"My wife had to deliver the babies at home because we couldn't find any transport," said Yakur. "Now that our kids have come into the world, all we want is to find a way to get them operated on so they can be separated and live normal lives."
