Biography of Satyendra Nath Bose

Satyendra Nath Bose, an Indian physicist, was a self-taught scholar and polyglot with a wide range of interests in various fields including physics, mathematics, chemistry, biology, mineralogy, philosophy, art, literature, and music. He was a member of many scientific research committees in independent India. Bose specialized in mathematical physics and gained his greatest recognition for his work on quantum mechanics in the early 1920s, which laid the foundation for Bose-Einstein statistics and the Bose-Einstein condensate theory. In 1954, Bose was awarded the Padma Vibhushan, the second-highest civilian award in India. The theoretical physicist Paul Dirac proposed naming the elementary particle "boson" in honor of Bose.

Early Life and Education

Satyendra Nath Bose was born on January 1, 1894, in Calcutta, India. He was the eldest and only son among seven children. His father, Surendranath Bose, worked in the engineering department of the East Indian Railway Company (EIRC). Bose began his education at the age of five. After completing his schooling, he first pursued a preparatory science course at Presidency College in Calcutta, where he studied under renowned educators, before enrolling in the college himself two years later. With a master's degree, Bose was appointed as a scientific officer at the University of Calcutta in 1916. It was here that he began delving into the theory of relativity.

Academic Career

From 1916 to 1921, Bose taught at the physics department of the University of Calcutta. He then became an assistant professor at the University of Dhaka, where he played a significant role in establishing new departments offering advanced courses for postgraduates and undergraduates. Bose himself taught thermodynamics and the theory of electromagnetism developed by James Clerk Maxwell. Bose's scientific paper, in which he derived Planck's energy distribution formula without relying on classical physics but using a new method of counting identical particle states, played a crucial role in the field of quantum statistics. Bose sent his research to Albert Einstein, who translated it into German and published it in the prestigious journal "Zeitschrift für Physik" on Bose's behalf. Following the successful publication, Bose spent two years working in European laboratories on crystallography and X-rays, collaborating not only with Einstein but also with Marie Curie and Louis de Broglie.

In 1926, Bose returned to the University of Dhaka, where he became the head of the physics department and remained the dean of the Faculty of Science until 1945. When the partition of India became inevitable, Bose moved to the University of Calcutta, where he taught until 1956. In later years, he conducted applied research, such as extracting helium from the hot springs of Bakreshwar. In addition to physics, Bose conducted research in biotechnology and literature. As a Bengali, he spent a considerable amount of time helping the Bengali language gain prominence in teaching and translated scientific articles into Bengali. Bose served as a consultant to the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR), president of the National Institute of Science (NIS), and the Indian Physical Society (IPS). He was elected the director-general of the Indian Science Congress (ISC) and served as vice president and later president of the Indian Statistical Institute (ISI). In 1958, he became a member of the Royal Society.

Satyendra Nath Bose married Ushabati at the age of 20, and they had nine children. Two of them died in early childhood. After his death in 1974, Bose left behind his wife, two sons, and five daughters.
