Early Life and EducationSaulius Sondeckis, the renowned Lithuanian violinist, conductor, and pedagogue, was born into a family with deep musical roots. His father, Jäckas Sondeckis, was a politician and mayor of Šiauliai, while his mother was a teacher at the Šiauliai Gymnasium.
Following in his father's footsteps, Sondeckis showed exceptional talent in music from a young age. In 1952, he graduated from the Vilnius Conservatory under the tutelage of violin virtuoso Aleksandr Livont. His pursuit of musical excellence continued in Moscow, where he completed post-graduate studies and masterclasses in conducting with the legendary Igor Markevitch.
Pedagogical and Orchestral Career
Sondeckis embarked on his teaching career at various music schools in Vilnius in 1952. From 1977, he held a professorship at the Vilnius Conservatory. Concurrently, he founded and led the Čiurlionis Art School Orchestra in 1956.
International recognition came in 1964 when Sondeckis led the Čiurlionis Orchestra to success at the Bucharest festival. This marked a watershed moment for Lithuanian conductors, as it was the first time a Lithuanian orchestra had toured under its own conductor. In 1976, the orchestra won the Herbert von Karajan International Youth Orchestra Competition in West Berlin, earning rave reviews for its exceptional performance.
Founder and Conductor
Sondeckis's legacy as a conductor is deeply intertwined with the Lithuanian Chamber Orchestra, which he established in 1960 and led for over four decades. He also founded the State Hermitage Orchestra in St. Petersburg in 1989 and served as the principal guest conductor of the Virtuosi of Moscow from 2004.
Mozart and Beyond
Sondeckis's masterful interpretations of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart's music won him international acclaim. He recorded the complete Mozart piano concertos with pianist Vladimir Krainev, and his concert recording of the opera "Don Giovanni" remains a benchmark.
Beyond classical repertoire, Sondeckis championed contemporary composers. He gave world premieres of works by Dmitri Shostakovich, Alfred Schnittke, Arvo Pärt, and numerous others.
Honors and Recognition
Sondeckis's exceptional talent and unwavering commitment to music earned him numerous awards and accolades. He was awarded the National Prize of Lithuania, the State Prize of the Lithuanian SSR, and the State Prize of the USSR. He held honorary doctorates from several universities, including the St. Petersburg State Conservatory. In 2009, he received the Order of Honor from Russia for his contributions to international musical relations.
