Leon Botstein is an American conductor and musicologist, best known as the President of Bard College. He is the music director and principal conductor of the American Symphony Orchestra (ASO) and the conductor laureate of the Jerusalem Symphony Orchestra (JSO), where he served as the music director and principal conductor from 2003 to 2010.

Early Life and Education
Leon Botstein was born on December 14, 1946, in Switzerland, into a family of doctors. His brother, David Botstein, is a biologist, and his wife, Barbara Haskell, is a historian. Botstein completed his high school education at the High School of Music and Art in New York. He then obtained a bachelor's degree from the University of Chicago and a doctorate in music history from Harvard University. His mentors include David Landes and Harold Farberman.

Career
At the age of 23, Botstein became the youngest college president in the history of the United States. From 1970 to 1975, he served as the president of Franconia College before becoming the president of Bard College. As the music director of the American Symphony Orchestra, Botstein is known for his support of thematic programming. He curates concert programs centered around specific themes related to literature, music history, or art. He also strives to include rarely performed works by famous composers and highlight the works of lesser-known composers that have not been previously performed in the United States.
